Introduction to Hindi verbs

In this Hindi Lesson will try to learn!

In English, the infinitive form of a verb is usually preceded by “to”.

for example, to eat, to be, to play, to do, to wake up, to see, to sleep, to wear are all infinitive form of verbs in English.

When these verbs are used in sentences, they get different endings depending upon the tense in which it is used.

For example, in a continuous tense, verbs  get suffix -ing (eat-ing, play-ing, sleep-ing, wear-ing, see-ing)

In simple past tense, verbs get suffix -id. (watch-ed, work-ed, talk-ed, rain-ed, start-ed)

This is known as inflection. In Hindi also is similar way while talking and writing too.

All Hindi verbs have their infinitive form and in their infinitive form Hindi verbs end with a suffix – ना (naa).

For example:  To eat is खा-ना (khaa-naa)

                           To drink is  पि-ना (pi-naa).

In the infinitive form of the verb “खा -ना” the root of the verb is  “खा” (kha)  or

In the infinitive form of the verb “आ – ना “the root of the verb is “आ” (aa).

When these verbs are used in different tenses, the root of the verb takes different suffix. (It is similar to English grammar.)

The suffix you attach also depends on the gender of the person talking.

For example, in Present Continuous Tense, verbs get suffix – रहा हूँ (raha hoon) when a man is speaking and रही हूँ (rahee hoon) when a woman is speaking.

मैं खा रहा हूँ  (main kha raha hoon) =  I am eating.

मैं खा रही हूँ | (main kha rahee hoon) =  I am eating.
